Food Premises Approval

Licence summary

Some manufacturers handling products of animal origin may need to be approved by the local authority or the Meat Hygiene Service. This approval process is more involved and requires business to comply not only with the food hygiene legislation which applies to all food business, but also with additional food hygiene legislation.

Examples of types of premises that are required to be approved by local authorities are stand alone premises (i.e. not attached to a slaughter house, cutting plant or game handling establishment):

  • meat processing plants
  • meat preparation plants
  • minced meat processing operations and mechanically separated meat processing plants
  • cold stores
  • dairy processing plants
  • fish processing plants
  • egg processing plants

If you are not sure whether the business you are running comes under this legislation, you should contact the local authority.

Consumer Complaint
We would always advise that in the event of a complaint the first contact is made with the organisation by you - preferably in the form of a letter (with proof of delivery). If that has not worked, if you are located in the UK, Consumer Direct will give you advice. From outside the UK contact the UK European Consumer Centre.

Other Redress

E.g. about noise, pollution etc. Also should one licence holder complain about another.
