Bradford District Fair Trade Way

The Fair Trade Way

Taking a step for Fairtrade in 2012

The Fair Trade Way is a scenic, circular walking route linking all the Fairtrade villages and towns in the district: Bradford, Bingley, Shipley, Baildon, Burley, Ilkley, Haworth, Denholme and Thornton.

Join us for nine walks along the Fair Trade Way and learn how Fairtrade changes the lives of poor producers in developing countries.

Walk details

The district’s Fairtrade groups will be walking a section of the new Fair Trade Way each Saturday (excluding Easter Saturday) finishing in Bradford on World Fair Trade Day, May 12 and everyone is invited to join them. See walks schedule below.

Please register your interest in advance by calling Karen Palframan on 07703 778261 or emailing karen.palframan@talktalk.net

Report from Fairtrade Way walk on 28 April

The Fair Trade Way walk around the Bradford Zone continued on Saturday 28th April with 20 intrepid walkers braving the unsettled weather which promised sunshine but delivered brief gusts and showers in-between.
They left a little later than planned having enjoyed a fairtrade breakfast thanks to Jonny and Shelley at Haworth Old Hall, the majority of the food being donated by Oakworth Co-op, a constant supporter of Haworth Fairtrade group, (the roaring log fire possibly contributed to delaying the impending task)

The group arrived in Denholme almost 2 hours later, wet, tired and happy to a welcome from Councillor Anne Jay the Town Mayor and members of the Denholme Fairtrade group where they enjoyed more fairtrade refreshments. Apparently a slight detour to the planned route was made due to a field housing horses.

The group of walkers consisted of members of the Fairtrade groups but also regular supporters and some who are new to Fairtrade and were interested to know more, new friendships were made and some of the walkers are keen to join the next one. Thanks to all concerned who 'took a step' for Fairtrade.

Take a Step for Fairtrade in 2012

Take a step in 2012. Register your step at fairtrade.org.uk/step

As we walk the Fair Trade Way, we will be encouraging everyone to take a step towards a fairer trading system. For example, your step could be to swap your tea bags, chocolate and flowers to Fairtrade ones and get everyone you know to do the same.

Fairtrade guarantees fair prices for producers in developing countries and provides extra support with Fairtrade social premiums. Fairtrade farming co-operatives often decide to spend the premiums on basic necessities such as schools, health care and clean water, thereby benefiting their communities.

The Fairtrade Foundation hopes to register 1.5 million steps during Fairtrade Fortnight; one for every farmer and worker the Foundation expects to work with. For more information and to register your step/s, visit www.fairtrade.org.uk/step.
