Sustainability

What is Sustainability?
There is growing concern regarding the adverse impact that development is having on the world around us. Non-renewable resources (such as coal, oil, gas) are being used up at an increasing rate.
We face a number of environmental challenges, and must ensure that resources are used more efficiently in order to minimise the effects of pollution on the environment. We can all play a part in providing solutions for a sustainable environment; many of these solutions can save money, improve health and well-being and help to ensure a better quality of life for people worldwide.
The public sector has a key role in furthering sustainable development. The extent to which sustainability can be incorporated into contracts may vary dependent on the type of goods, services or works being procured but measures are being taken to make a significant contribution to the sustainability agenda.
Sustainable procurement is about meeting the District's needs for goods, services, and works without impacting detrimentally, either directly or indirectly, on the environment. This involves not just considering the environmental, economic and social impacts but also looking at the whole life costs of goods, services or works being purchased.
