Councillor Naveeda Ikram

Councillor Naveeda Ikram was born in Rochdale.

Her father was a bank manager, and during his career lived in various cities, and on his retirement her parents decided to settle in Bradford.

She was elected in 2004 as the first British Pakistani woman on Bradford Council, and lives in Little Horton, the Ward she represents. Since her election she has taken a keen interest in becoming a positive role model, raising awareness and inspiring other women in different walks of life.

In 2007, she was one of two Bradford Councillors picked for an innovative eighteen-month programme designed to identify future leaders. Councillor Ikram qualified for Next Generation, developed by the Leadership Centre for Local Government.

Councillor Ikram is the Deputy Chairperson of the Social Care Scrutiny Improvement Committee and for Bradford West Area Committee She also sits on the Standards Committee, the Education and Social Services Panel. Since 2008 she has been the Shadow Policy Spokesperson for Adult Services. She has also been the Women Officer for the Labour Group from 2005-2008 and has organised a nationally recognised Women’s Conference for the Labour Party in Bradford.

She works for Pakistan International Airlines based in Bradford and holds an MSc Degree in Sociology.

She is a Member of the West Yorkshire Fire Authority and on the RSL Board for InCommunities and takes a keen interest in her local community and is a School Governor at Newby Primary School, and a member of the Residents’ Association and community groups in her Ward. She is eager to participate in and promote community cohesion and integration events.

The Deputy Lord Mayor supports the work of the British Red Cross, Cancer Research UK, Edhi Welfare Association and Behbud Khawatten (a women’s development project in Pakistan).

Her interests include meeting people, reading, travelling and eating out.

She is married to Saqib who works at the Bradford Magistrates’ Court. They have two boys Silham (13) and Faham (12) and a daughter, Alisha (5) with whom they enjoy spending quality time.

Councillor Ikram is keen to see more participation and confidence from communities in the democratic process. She is proud to make the city her permanent home and is looking forward to her role as Deputy Lord Mayor.

The Deputy Lord Mayor eats only Halal meat.
