World Book Day

Children in Bradford can enjoy a day of events to mark World Book Day on Thursday 4 March.

World Book Day is the biggest annual celebration of books and reading in the UK.

Twenty five libraries and the two mobile libraries will be holding special events to celebrate the day.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Eccleshill Library will be holding a storytime and activity session including bookmark making at 3.15pm.
  • Holme Wood Library is having a write a short story and poetry hour for children up to 16-years-old from 4pm.
  • A book review competition and bookmark making session is taking place at East Bowling Library from 5pm.

Contact your local library for more details on what is happening to celebrate the day or contact Bradford Central Library on 01274 433686.

To mark the day there are six specially produced £1 books which can be bought with £1 book tokens given to all nursery and primary age children through schools.

Bradford Central Library has teamed up with Waterstones to offer the chance for children to exchange their £1 book vouchers at Central Library on Saturday 6 March from 11am.

Parents, carers and children at Ley Top Primary in Allerton will be taking part in a special 'train journey' to mark World Book Day. Organised by the Council's Parental Involvement Workers, the event will include families taking part in train journey role plays, such as buying tickets and packing suitcases, as well as enjoying stories about going on a journey.

All children will receive a free copy of a Thomas the Tank Engine book.

This also supports Bradford Council's b someone campaign which is all about encouraging adults to take more of an active role in children's learning through everyday activities, such as reading.

Coun Anne Hawkesworth, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Environment and Culture, said: "This is a great opportunity to celebrate books and reading and promote a love of literature to children. Anything that encourages our children and young people to start reading and begin a lifelong love of books is welcome."
