Tickets still up for grabs for celebration night

Soap and sports stars will be helping to celebrate the achievements of young Bradfordians at a special awards ceremony.

Emmerdale's Michael Wolfenden, who plays David Metcalfe, and Verity Rishworth, who plays Donna Dingle Windsor will join Coronation Street actors Nikki Patel and Mikey North - otherwise known as Amber Kalirai and Gary Windass - at Bradford's fourth annual Young Citizen Awards.

They will present prizes to winners along with BBC Look North's Christa Ackroyd, players from Bradford City and Bradford Bulls at the Oscars-style evening on March 17 at St George's Hall, which has been organised by Bradford Council and partner agencies.

This year a record 250 nominations have flooded in for the awards which honour youngsters who have gone that extra mile to achieve their goals or help others.

The awards also reflect the district's b someone campaign which is all about encouraging children and young people to fulfil their potential and boost their skills.

The categories come from the Government's Every Child Matters Agenda - be Healthy, Staying Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Making a Positive Contribution, and Achieving Economic Wellbeing.

Last year's Outstanding Achievement Award winner Mariam Ahmed, 20, of West Bowling, will also be talking about her experiences since scooping the prize and how it has inspired her to further help others.

Coun Michael Kelly, the Council's Executive member for Services to Children and Young People, said: "These awards give us the opportunity to recognise and shout about the achievements of our young people and it's wonderful to see local stars also coming on board to mark the occasion."

Free tickets for the night are also now available through Asma Shaheen on 01274 436006, or email: asma.shaheen@bradford.gov.uk
