Fun week for budding scientists

Youngsters will be donning white lab coats and goggles to make potions at a Bradford Children's Centre to mark National Science Week.

On Monday, 9 March, the budding scientists will be experimenting with different liquids in the science laboratory at Allerton Children's Centre in Avenel Road, Allerton.

Throughout the week various workshops are being organised by the centre as part of Bradford Council's b someone campaign which encourages adults to be more involved with children and young people's education and learning to help them fulfil their potential. The campaign also dedicates 2009 as a year of education.

The centre's theme for the week will be 'change' and children will be focusing on the Jack and the Beanstalk story and taking part in various arts and crafts sessions related to this.

A 'cook and eat' workshop will also be held at Café West on Monday for pupils from Ley Top Primary school, and on Wednesday, 11 March children aged up to three and their parents will be making rice krispie cakes which will be sold for Red Nose Day on Friday, 13 March.

Babies, toddlers and parents are also invited to a sensory potion session at the centre on Wednesday when youngsters will have the chance to play with and roll bottles filled with coloured water, sequins and glitter.

Coun Michael Kelly, the Council's Executive Member for Services to Children and Young People, said: "It's great to see Allerton Children's Centre has really grasped this campaign and this exciting week of workshops really focus on the key areas - cooking, playing, reading and counting."

Dave Morrison, Head of Allerton Children's Centre, said: "It will be a wonderful week for children and parents with lots of play and learning experiences for everyone.

"National Science Week was an opportunity not to be missed and tying it in with the b someone campaign will help us to highlight the important role adults play in a child's development."
