Roadworks in the Shipley and Baildon area
There are roadworks in the Shipley and Baildon area because of essential gas main replacements by Northern Gas Networks (NGN). This follows gas escapes in the area and considerable concern about public safety.
NGN, which is responsible for the works, has delayed repair work until the school holidays to try to ease traffic congestion problems.
Warning signs about the roadworks were in place for three weeks before the work started. The road layout and nearby traffic signals make such works particularly difficult to do, even at the quietest times.
Overnight working is not possible because of the noise it would make.
NGN and the Council are doing what they can to limit the problems:
- NGN plan to have workers on site from 7am to 8pm to complete the works sooner than the originally estimated 11 weeks
- Our traffic signals unit is out working with the contractors to try to ease traffic flows on the main routes by adjusting the green light timings at peak times
- NGN is putting up warning signs further away from the site advising drivers of delays and to find alternative routes
- NGN will be giving further updates of the works through the media and Twitter.
Unfortunately there is little else we can do to prevent delays to your journeys. The works are necessary and cannot be put off.
We will update this page when we get new information. If you would like to speak to Northern Gas Networks about the work, call their Customer Care team on 0845 634 0508, and select option 7.
If you smell gas call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
No disruptions have been reported.
