Setting up a Direct Debit for Council Tax

Paying by direct debit is the quickest and easiest way to pay your bill.

You do not need to do anything if you have already set up a direct debit, your new bill will list the payment instalment amounts and the date they will be taken.

Setting up a direct debit is easy

You will need:

  • Council Tax Reference number (from your bill)
  • Bank or Building Society name
  • Account number
  • Sort code
  • Branch address

Decide beforehand:

  1. how many months you want to pay over:
    • 10 (April to January)
    • 12 (April to March)
  2. which day of the month you wish the payment to be taken:
    • 5th
    • 10th
    • 15th

For Council Tax Payers

If you wish to set up a Direct Debit for Council Tax and the name on your Council Tax bill does not match the name on the bank account from which payments are to be taken, print off a form to complete and return.

Council Tax - getting your bill by email

If you want to get your Council Tax bill by email, you can choose this when setting up your Direct Debit in the form above. If you're already paying by Direct Debit, you can request an e-bill only.

Why pay by Direct Debit?

All Direct Debits are covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee.

Paying by Direct Debit is the easiest way to make payment because you don't have to carry cash, write cheques or sort out paperwork and postage. Your Bank or Building Society will do all the work for you and yet you remain in control.

Can I change my payment date?

You can change your payment date by filling in the Direct Debit form

What should I do if my bank account has changed?

If your bank account details have changed, you can fill in the Direct Debit form to let us know.
