Advice, Benefits and Council Tax

Housing and Council Tax Benefit

What is it?

If you have a low income you may be entitled to:

  • Housing Benefit - help with paying your rent
  • Council Tax Benefit - help with paying your Council Tax.

How do I qualify?

To work out how much you may be entitled to we look at:

  • Household Income.
  • Capital (e.g. bank and building society accounts, investments, cash and property etc).
  • Personal circumstances (such as your age, who lives with you, whether anyone in your household has a disability, etc).

If you rent from a private landlord your claim will be worked out under a scheme called Local Housing Allowance

How is it paid?

Housing benefit is paid by BACS (this means it is paid directly into your bank account) or by cheque.

Extra help?

In certain circumstances, the Council may be able to give you more help with your rent in the form of Discretionary Housing Payments.
