“Atzmon is an astonishing musician with a seemingly effortless ability to demolish and rebuild any old tune he chooses to play.” TIME OUT
“Atzmon sends his soprano sax and clarinet soaring over complex rhythms from all points of the globe with a poetry that never forfeits control.” Metro
Born in Israel in 1963 into a secular Jewish family, saxophonist, clarinettist and social activist, Gilad Atzmon is regarded as one of the most original musical (and political) thinkers of his generation. His Jazz Album ‘Exile’ was voted Best Jazz Album of the year by Time Out Magazine.
Over recent years, Atzmon's music has shifted towards a cultural hybrid. As a bandleader and reed player he has been amazing his listeners with his powerful personal style, combining great bebop artistry and Middle-Eastern roots in a sophisticated, sometimes ironical manner. Gilad's live performances are simply breathtaking and overwhelming, you will be blown away.
WORKSHOP
‘Discourse of Resistance’ - Gilad Atzmon: Jazz Improvisation Workshop
(with a discussion about the life and politics of artists and their art
Thursday 24.9.09, 11.00-1.00pm, Tasmin Little Music Centre
FREE
‘’ Atzmon’s music challenges the premise upon which the current Arab-Israeli peace process is based’’ says Karen Abi-Ezzi, Peace Studies Lecturer.
A fierce defender of his beliefs and his music, saxophonist and clarinettist Gilad Atzmon blows his sax and his views with blunt honesty. A wind instrument, needs resistance for the breath to create sound, equally, good debate requires resistance to make it rigorous, interesting and fruitful.

Harlem Gem with special guest Junior Lex
Checkpoint, 45 Westgate, BD1 2TU
Saturday 26th September 8pm onwards

“A Gem Success Story”
Hailing from Huddersfield, Harlem Gem are Richmond Quarshie (Richy Gem) and Lloyd Charles (Lloydie Gem). Richy is the gifted songwriter, arranger, musician and producer, whilst Lloydie provides the distinctive lead vocals. The two met whilst working on various projects, but didn't become a firm partnership until 1989. In 1990 after signing to Boss Records, they released a series of singles including the unforgettable “Missing You Missing Mec/w Heaven Is (Lying in Your Arms)to top the Independent charts and win Best Newcomers Award.
1994 heralded a new horizon as the single 'Let Me Love You' received critical acclaim and was play-listed on radio stations across the country including Radio 1. It was also featured on Jet Star’s premier reggae compilation series- Pure Lovers Vol. 8 alongside distinguished legends like Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Junior Delgado and Ruddy Thomas helping to establish Harlem Gem in Europe, Africa, the Far East and other parts of the world.
1994 not only saw more releases from Harlem Gem, but also an appearance on 'Teenbeat' - Africa's premier television music programme which has hosted amongst others,Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Sounds of Blackness, Shabba Ranks and Public Enemy. With a massive following built on powerful live shows including appearances with The Wailers, D-Influence, Alton Ellis, Mike Anthony, Don Campbell and many more, Harlem Gem sparked off a feeling of something special happening in reggae. In 1999, their eagerly awaited debut album- ‘HUNGRY’’ exploded on the scene, which sent out powerful messages about struggles and issues everyone related to and was acclaimed as one of the significant reggae albums of its time.
Before long Harlem Gem had added a tour of France and appearances at CLOTHESHOW (NEC), Hackney Empire, the Commonwealth Sports Awards and Bradford International Music Festival to their ever-impressive portfolio. Their booking for the Commonwealth Sports Awards in St Lucia confirmed their status as one of the UK's leading reggae bands. Appearing alongside Beres Hammond during the 2003 tour was another huge statement for the band’s accomplishments and UK reggae. Harlem Gem have now launched their ‘Gem Magic Inc.’ label and the first release is the Xtra Play 1 EP.
Junior Lex, formerly with One Love, is certainly not a stranger to this business as evidenced by reports of the trio’s performances on Luciano’s The Messenger Tour. Now under the banner of GEM MAGIC INC., Junior Lex with The Rain, Evershine and All About The Future shows that he too can sparkle his own brand of magic out of the abundance of talent endowed to the label.
The combination of Harlem Gem and Junior Lex on the powerfully moving Never You One is class affirming the versatility of the above named against conscious, thought-provoking and uplifting lyrics. With this infectious package for its debut, this is not only a positive statement for reggae but also one for the GEM MAGIC INC. stable confidently asserting that;
