Flood Awareness Survey

To help better understand the future Flood Risk Management needs for the District, the Drainage Services Unit are engaged in two EU Interreg Projects: FloodResilienCity (FRC) and Skills, Integration & New Technologies Project (SKINT)

Recent floods have demonstrated that most cities (authorities, businesses and inhabitants alike) are insufficiently concerned about, aware of, or prepared for actual floods. Growing populations have resulted in pressure to build more houses. Commerce and industry also have a constant need to expand in and around cities. Conflict often arises between development needs and flood risk. Flood risk may escalate with climate change. Conventional flood protection (structures) is unlikely to be adequate, affordable or maintainable in the future. Integrated, adaptable and flexible solutions are needed to allow for climate uncertainty.

The FRC project aims to integrate the increasing demand for more houses and other buildings in urban areas, with the need for more and better flood management measures in North West European cities.

European Water Framework & Floods Directives require improvement in urban water quality and efficient management of urban water quantity. Along with an increasing urban population and the uncertain effects of climate change, these are the challenges of current and future urban water management.

The SKINT Project aims to better reconcile spatial planning and water management. It encourages the use of solutions which have already proved successful elsewhere.

Combined work from the two projects includes:-

  • Providing practical and useful information to residents at risk of flooding, e.g. how to protect your property and contents, where to seek help in the event of a flood, and how to recover afterwards.
  • Production of a water resources web-portal and web-based training programme for water and urban land use professionals. The web-portal will be of use to Politicians, Professionals and the Public alike. It should help the next generation to understand the risks and uncertainties associated with flooding and pollution, and how they can be sustainably managed.

The Flood Awareness questionnaire is designed to provide us with information about what the residents of Bradford District understand about flooding and how we can use this to improve the information and services we provide.

Please take some time to fill in the survey. We want to ensure that the work we undertake is of direct benefit to local communities. As residents of Bradford your input is very important.
