Alternative Maximum Assistance

What is Alternative Maximum Assistance?

Alternative Maximum Assistance is help with paying your Council Tax.

It is for people of pension age who live with another adult who is on a low income.

Who can get it?

You can only apply if you are a pensioner. People of working age cannot apply.

You may be able to get this help if:

  • You share your home with one or more adults aged 18 or over

That person:

  • is not your husband, wife or partner
  • does not pay rent to you
  • does not have to pay Council Tax
  • is on a low income

Does my income matter?

No.
Your own income and savings are not counted.

For example:
If you do not get Council Tax Reduction because of your income, but your adult daughter lives with you and gets Income Support, you could still get Alternative Maximum Assistance.
