A biographical outline of the Deputy Lord Mayor 2008-2009 Councillor Hawarun Hussain

Councillor Hawarun Hussain was born in Bangladesh and moved to the UK in 1983 and was educated at Swire Smith School in Keighley. Her parents continued living in Keighley and a few years ago Councillor Hussain moved to Shipley, the Ward she keenly represents for the Green Party.

Since being elected in 2004 she has taken a special interest in environmental issues such as waste management and transport and she has played an active part in the regeneration and improvement scrutiny and health improvement scrutiny committees.

In her previous occupations Councillor Hussain has been a Community Development Worker and involved in promotions of Heart Health and Walking for Health. She is currently a Dental Investment Project Manager for the National Health Service and is undertaking an MSc in Public Health.

She is a member of Nell Bank Outdoor Centre, Bradford Community Environment Project and the Regional Environment Protection Advisory Committee.

Councillor Hussain supports Oxfam, the British Heart Foundation, the Marie Curie Hospice and SUS – a women's development project in Bangladesh.

Her interests include meeting people, reading, travelling, growing and cooking food and eating out. She is also passionate about the vital role of good education in giving children the best possible start in life.

The Deputy Lord Mayor is a Muslim and mother of two boys, Akbar, 17 and Alamin, 14. In addition to English, she also speaks Bangla and some Urdu. She likes vegetarian dishes and halal meat.
