Bradford celebrates launch of City of Film

The Lord Mayor of Bradford is to host a Civic Reception this week to officially celebrate Bradford's designation as the world's first UNESCO City of Film.

The weekend of activities organised and funded by Bradford Council, the National Media Museum, Screen Yorkshire and other partners will start with a Civic Reception and film-themed afternoon on Thursday 18 March.

Children involved in the My City, My Family, My Film Project will be joined by the Lord Mayor of Bradford Coun John Godward and City of Film Board Chair and film producer Steve Abbott (A Fish Called Wanda and Brassed Off).

Thirty-five children were involved in My City, My Family, My Film project which involved interviewing older family members to ask them what brought them to Bradford, the name of their favourite film and the best thing about their family. The secondary school involved in the project was Grange Technology College and primary schools were Bowling Park, St Stephen's CE, Frizinghall, Lister, Shipley CE and Our Lady of Victories.

The film will be screened on the Big Screen in Centenary Square over the weekend.

A series of initiatives as part of the City of Film strategy will be announced at the Civic Reception. The aim is that by 2020, Bradford will be a world-class place in which to learn about film, make film, enjoy film and visit because of film.

Lord Mayor of Bradford Coun John Godward said: "Last summer we became UNESCO's first world City of Film and this is our chance to officially celebrate this and welcome local people and visitors to the first City of Film weekend."
