Theatre performance takes road safety messages to secondary schools
Article dated Thursday Nov 23, 2023
A drama company will be giving Year 7 pupils in secondary schools across West Yorkshire a hard-hitting, multi-media theatre performance, starting from 22 November 2023 through to the beginning of February 2024.
The 30 minute play, called ‘What went down’ is performed by The Riot Act, and follow-up discussions educate young people on key road safety issues:
- The dangers of roadside distractions from music, phones and friends
- Strategies to stay safe, such as identifying and dealing with peer influence and pressure
- Promoting safe, responsible and positive behaviour amongst students travelling to and from school
West Yorkshire Safe Roads Delivery Group have commissioned the performances as part of their commitment to keeping young people across West Yorkshire safe and it supports the Vision Zero aim to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for everyone in West Yorkshire.
Statistics show that secondary school pupils are particularly vulnerable when it comes to road traffic collisions.
Simon D’Vali – Chair of West Yorkshire Safe Roads Steering Group said: “Raising awareness and educating young people through a thought provoking drama performance will hopefully help them think about their behaviour as pedestrians and improve their attitude to road safety. These drama performances complement work being carried out by all the West Yorkshire Council’s Road Safety Teams and other agencies, such as West Yorkshire Police and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, in schools across the county to deliver important safety messages. We are sure they will influence and encourage our young people to change their behaviour.”
The start of the tour has been timed to coincide with Brake Road Safety Week which runs from 19 – 25 November.
